KÒRSOU - CURAÇAO

exhibition in the National Archives of The Hague (the Netherlands)
behind the Central Station
from December 2021 till October 2022

A very special group art exhibition by Curacao artist who have made use of the materials of the national archives, either from Curacao or from the Netherlands.

The title says: voices of the past, people from today.

Avantia Damberg is greatly inspired by the history of Curaçao that is so rich and a treasure for starting points to make work about Curaçao now.

The exhibition contains interviews and photos made by the Curaçao photographer, documentary maker and culturist Selwyn de Wind. In addition, ten artists (including Avantia Damberg) and performers show with their work how they view slavery, resilience, society and governance. Guest curator Dyonna Benett curated the exhibition in close collaboration with advisors from both the Netherlands and Curaçao. Visit the exhibition Kòrsou – Curaçao and discover that the voices, music and documents from then are still relevant and meaningful.

Art route open stal 2021

July 17 - August 15 Oldeberkoop Friesland
Oosterwolderseweg 3, Oldeberkoop

An art exhibition that was planned for 2020 but due to the corona pandemic has been moved to this year. Which suits all for the best. The art organisation Open Stal has a 50 years anniversary this year! Both Avantia Damberg and Ailsa Anastatia were invited to exhibit their work.

Avantia went to Leeuwarden, where she was born, to do an artist-in-residence at Lies Keramiek. The collection she makes here is about the April killings from 1942 where Chinese stokers were killed during a strike in the kamps of Suffisant, Curacao.. Avantia illustrates the entire story on Chinese porcelain vases. This story is unknown as it has been silenced by the Dutch authorities at that time. But history is history and Damberg tells the story fitting the Friesland tradition of delft blue ceramics and of the theme of Open Stal: Imagine: Peace, Torlerance and Freedom.

She got granted by the Mondriaan Fonds to do the artist-in-residency.

Visit the exhibition from July 17 to August 15 and you can meet the artist on the festive opening on Saturday July 17th fromn 13.00 to 18.00. The address how to get there is all on the website of Open Stal: www.openstal.nl

Oosterwoldseweg 3, Oldeberkoop. For tickets (3 euro pp) Please go to the website to find the navigation.

Blue bay sculpture park

a third edtion of Map of Curacao
November 2017

the foundation Blue Bay Sculpture Garden has asked me and 5 more artists to make sculptures for the new Sculpture Park in Blue Bay.

I was asked to make another Map of Curacao. Each Map is different, adapting to the environment. This time I make a 2.5x5.5meter sculpture from natural rocks and sticking all the names that are stamped on little coral stones to the Map. A heck of a job. Thankfully I got assistence from Arnold Bakker and Rina Rojer. Arnold helped making the stone shape of Curacao and Rina helped stamping all those names (800) letter by letter. But this work is not finished yet. We hope to finish by the end of this month .

fence for the new children's museum Curacao

workshops and fence assignment

In the month of October I did several workshops with children who in this matter made self portrait art works for the new Children's Museum restrooms. Artist Arnold Bakker assisted me and enjoyed working with children very much. We got asked afterwards to make a fence, also with imput from kids we gathered from their after-school. The fence became a playful and happy fence, interactive and you can sit and relax in it. We hope children will enjoy it, we surely enjoyed making it. The opening of the Children's Museum Curacao is December 2, 2017. Exciting!

art project with dolphin therapist and jean girigori

a very special weekend

Faye is the dolphin therapist who approached me and Jean Girigori to do an art project with abused or traumatized children. I wrote the part of the art plan and Faye wrote the therapeutic part of the project. The kids had an amazing weekend. We collected trash at a nature park where the kids got to enjoy the beauty of their island, but also the sad side of the pollution of plastics caused by overconsumerism. And that all that plastic could be turned into art works they enjoyed immensely. The next day (read more)

On the side

other entrepreneurship next to being an artist

Few artist live from the start only from their art, but this is certainly the goal. Many of us freelance or have side jobs. I freelance designing logo's and websites at Wèpsait Awor Awor! meaning Website Right Now! https://wepsaitaworawor.wordpress.com/. I just want everyone to have a nice website and a cool logo, to see local entrepreneurship come to the next level. When I was making this website for myself, I discovered how passioned I am to do this, I couldn't rest until the website was done. So I thought: okay, if I am zealous like this about websites, let's also earn with it. And so it began. I also give workshops to adults, schools, children, community centers etc.

ISLA DEN NOS BIDA

group exhibition of 100 years oil refinery in Curacao

Although I don't have much positive to say or make about the large sore in my eye in the middle of this beautiful island, I was asked to participate in this exhibition anyway. So I did. It is an ode and mockery at the same time about the Shell and current oil refinery displayed in 9 tiles called 'Life Stages'.

world trip as nomad artist

travelling for 6 months in 3 continents

I've always dreamt of wandering the earth. Traveling while creating art. being a nomad artist. This is my first serious attempt in doing so. I started from Curaçao to Italy, Europe. Then Croatia, Slovakia and Ukraine, Kiev followed.

I flew to the United States where I am visiting 5 different states, if it all works out. And After the US I go to Africa, visiting South Africa and Kenya. Then I return to the Netherlands to take a flight fro Amsterdam back to Curaçao. I am all visiting friends, as I have friends all over the globe. My idea is to exhibit, give art talks, do assignments and more, while traveling from place to place.

I keep a blog on Facebook and people also follow me on Instagram. And now I have Patreon. Patreon is for patrons to support creators like me. You can support me and this journey and get my art back in return. But honestly, you give way more then you think.

stop pollution now art show

art exhibition to create awareness on pollution

We are a group of concerned citizens of Curaçao. We experience that Curaçao has too much pollution (air, water, litter, car wrecks etc.) and we would like to draw the attention to the fact that we should live in a cleaner environment, for our own and our children’s wellbeing. We would like to do this in an alternative way by organizing an art (sales) exhibition.
